How an IPL photofacial works: The spots soak up
the light.

Light passes right through clear skin. When it hits color — brown in a sunspot, red in a tiny blood vessel — the light stops and turns into heat right there. IPL sends out many colors of light at once, while a regular laser uses just one. That is why one session can work on brown and red at the same time.

Your IPL appointment: What to expect.

  1. Consult

    Your provider checks your skin type and what you want treated. IPL is not a good fit for every skin tone, and you hear that before treatment.

  2. Shield and treat

    You put on protective goggles, the skin is cleaned, and the area is treated. Most people say it feels like a quick snap against the skin.

  3. Afterwards

    Mild redness or warmth that fades within hours. You must protect the area from the sun afterward, because sun can bring on new spots.

IPL questions

How many IPL sessions will I need?
There is no fixed number. Some improvement can show after one session, but a series is usually recommended for the best result. It depends on how much pigment there is and how your skin responds. Your provider maps it out at the consult.
Does an IPL photofacial hurt?
Most people say it feels like a quick snap of light on the skin. Afterward there is mild redness or warmth, which usually fades within a few hours.
Why did my spots get darker?
That is normal. Treated spots rise to the surface and get darker before flaking off on their own, leaving brighter, clearer skin. Do not pick at them. Let them come away by themselves.
What areas can IPL treat?
Face, neck, chest and hands. Sessions are priced for the full face, face and neck, or face, neck and décolletage (upper chest).
How much does IPL cost in OKC?
IPL is $350 a session for the full face, $500 for face and neck, and $750 for face, neck and décolletage (upper chest). It takes a series, not one visit. Wheeler members take 10% to 15% off every session and get a monthly credit toward it, and a series can go on a payment plan.
